Sync Shop Carts Across Devices to Lift Checkout Conversion

Shop now verifies shoppers while they browse, not only at checkout. That unlocks cross-device cart sync, one-tap customer account sign-in, and a prefilled Buy with Shop Pay button, on all browsers.

Executive summary

What changed

Shop identity used to be a checkout-time signal: a shopper tapped Buy with Shop Pay, and everything before that step ran anonymous.

Recognition now happens during browsing and persists across browser sessions once the shopper has signed in with Shop anywhere. Carts sync in both directions between the Shop app and your online store, and between a shopper's own devices, so a cart built on a phone is waiting on a laptop. Sign-in to customer accounts collapses to one tap, the Shop Pay button renders personalized rather than generic, and Shop sends its own reminders for carts left behind.

Read the limits before planning around this. The shopper needs a Shop account, not necessarily the app, and sync is on by default. Carts are not merged: if one already exists where the shopper is browsing, it stays and only one syncs. A product unavailable on a channel still cannot be bought there. The matching-email sync path excludes legacy customer accounts.

Why it matters

The gain is mechanical rather than promotional. Cross-device shopping is normal at enterprise volume, and its cost has always been a rebuilt cart and a re-entered card. Removing both shortens the path for shoppers already likely to buy.

Second, you get a recovery surface you do not pay per message to use, running alongside your email and SMS flows, which is also a reason to revisit cadence before the two stack. Third, matching-email sync is tied to new customer accounts, so a store on the classic version gets this only partially. Our comparison of new and classic customer accounts sets out what that migration actually involves.

One caveat: attribution gets murkier. Recovered revenue your ESP used to claim may now be partly Shop's work, and neither system will tell you cleanly which reminder did it.

Role-specific impact

Use-case example

Real-world scenario

A home furnishings brand on Shopify Plus runs 400,000 sessions a month, 68 percent mobile. Shoppers who browse on a phone and return on a desktop convert at roughly 1.4 percent, against 2.2 percent for single-device shoppers. The gap is largely rebuild friction, since furniture is rarely a one-session decision.

If 9 percent of sessions are cross-device, that is 36,000 sessions. Closing half the 0.8 point gap is about 144 extra orders a month, or roughly 42,000 dollars at a 290 dollar average order value, from configuration rather than spend. That is a model, not a promise, so measure a baseline first.

Implementation checklist

  1. Confirm the Shop channel is installed and Shop sign-in is enabled.
  2. Verify you are on new customer accounts, since matching-email cart sync excludes legacy accounts.
  3. Audit custom and headless cart code for assumptions about when the cart can change.
  4. Review product channel availability so synced carts do not carry unpurchasable items.
  5. Align abandoned cart cadence across your ESP, SMS platform, and Shop so no shopper is chased three times.
  6. Update privacy disclosures to reflect data Shopify collects directly from Shop account users.
  7. Instrument a 14 day baseline: cross-device conversion rate, cart recovery rate, and checkout load time.

FAQ

Unknown block type "span", specify a component for it in the `components.types` option Do shoppers need the Shop app installed for their carts to sync?

Unknown block type "span", specify a component for it in the `components.types` option No. They need a Shop account and need to be recognized or signed in on your store. The account is the requirement, though the app is still the most common way shoppers get one.

Unknown block type "span", specify a component for it in the `components.types` option Will a synced cart merge with a cart the shopper already has?

Unknown block type "span", specify a component for it in the `components.types` option No. Carts are not combined. If a cart already exists where the shopper is browsing, it is kept and only one syncs, so avoid merchandising or bundle logic that assumes a merge.
