Enable Shop Pay Installments on Every Business Entity

Shop Pay Installments is no longer limited to your primary business entity. Merchants running multiple entities in the US, Canada, or the UK can now activate it on every eligible entity from Shopify Payments settings.

Executive summary

What changed

Shop Pay Installments is the buy now, pay later option built into Shop Pay, supported for merchants and buyers in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Until now, activation was tied to a single business entity: in practice, the primary one. Organizations selling through several entities could offer installments on one storefront and nothing comparable on the rest.

Activation is now available per entity from Shopify Payments advanced settings. Each entity still has to qualify on its own. The entity must be located in a supported country, hold a Shopify Payments account registered in that country, and use the matching selling and payout currency: USD for the United States and Puerto Rico, CAD for Canada, GBP for the United Kingdom. Eligible order values remain 35 to 30,000 in USD or CAD, and 50 to 30,000 in GBP, inclusive of discounts, shipping, and taxes.

Why it matters

Multi-entity selling is now the standard structure for Plus merchants operating across jurisdictions, and the business entity is the unit that carries legal registration, tax treatment, and payout routing. That made the old single-entity limit an architectural penalty: the cleanest tax and finance setup was also the one that stripped financing from some of your storefronts.

The commercial effect is measurable. Installment messaging on product and cart pages influences consideration on higher-priced carts, and its absence on one entity produces a quiet, structural conversion difference against another. Because entity performance is usually read inside consolidated reporting, that gap can persist for quarters without anyone naming the cause.

If you are still working through an entity-based structure after the retirement of expansion stores, our earlier recap on multi-entity selling covers how the pieces fit together.

Role-specific impact

Use-case example

Real-world scenario

A homewares brand runs a United States entity and a United Kingdom entity on Shopify Plus, with an average order value of 210 USD. Installments were live on the United States storefront only. The United Kingdom storefront converted at 1.6 percent against 2.0 percent in the United States on comparable traffic, a difference the team had attributed to seasonality.

After enabling installments on the United Kingdom entity, the question becomes how much of that 0.4 point gap financing accounts for. Hold creative and promotion calendars steady for four weeks and read the change on that entity alone. If installments explain even half the gap, the annualized recovery is material against a configuration change that takes an afternoon.

Implementation checklist

  1. Inventory your business entities and note the country, Shopify Payments account status, selling currency, and payout currency for each.
  2. Confirm eligibility per entity. Currency mismatches are the most common blocker, not geography.
  3. Open Shopify Payments advanced settings and enable Shop Pay Installments on each qualifying entity.
  4. Verify installment messaging renders on product, cart, and checkout for every newly enabled entity, including any headless surfaces.
  5. Check that order values on those storefronts fall inside the eligible range, and flag catalogs that sit mostly below the threshold.
  6. Baseline conversion rate and average order value per entity now, so the change has a clean before and after.

FAQ

Q: Does enabling installments on a secondary entity affect payouts on the primary one?

A: No. Each business entity keeps its own Shopify Payments account, payout schedule, and settlement currency. Enabling installments on one entity changes nothing about how another entity is paid.

Q: What if one of our entities sells in a currency that does not match its country?

A: That entity will not qualify. The requirement pairs the entity location with the Shopify Payments account country and the selling and payout currency. Resolving the currency configuration is the prerequisite, not a workaround.
